Boost student interaction and create community through a university app

Boost student interaction and create community through a university app
Creating connections in a digital world
Birkbeck is London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education. The university serves a large proportion of nontraditional students - working professionals and other Londoners who are extremely busy and require the flexibility of connecting with the university while on-the-go. Mobile technology was identified as one area in which the university could significantly innovate. Gemma Bauman, a Student Engagement Officer, shares: “We live in a digital world, yet people want human connection even more. We knew digital technology would let them connect online to meet offline.” Using Guidebook’s easy platform, Gemma created a guide for Birkbeck’s new student orientation. The app gives busy students the ability to manage their schedules whenever it suits them best. Since these students are constantly on-the-go, a mobile app is the easiest way for them to get the information they need. This convenience resulted in more sign-ups for orientation events. The Student Engagement team was also able to decrease printing costs. While this was a first-year pilot and they were aware that paper couldn’t be removed entirely, even with the purchase of the app, they were able to reduce total costs by £300.Effortless student-led engagement
The real benefit of the university app, however, was how it instantly became a space for students to initiate conversations and learn from each other. This was achieved through Interact - Guidebook’s social activity feed. Gemma shares:“Initially it started out with just an introduction post from the team. We weren’t sure if it would be utilised - but a student gave a shout-out, and it just took-off. The whole thing has been very student-led.”Students have been using Interact for three things:
- Course shout-outs: “Are we in the same course? Let’s form a study group.”
- Pre- and post- event meet-ups: “Who wants to connect at this event?”
- Questions about process: “I don’t have my student ID yet. How do I go about this?”
This peer-to-peer interaction has led to reassurance, guidance in processes, and students getting together more often, more naturally. Birkbeck’s Student Engagement team have been able to answer questions if needed, and the responses are visible to all, reducing the number of questions asked through private channels like email or phone. What’s most exciting is how engagement has continued - in the two weeks since the orientation events ended, the app has seen an additional 200 downloads. There are still daily check-ins and people connecting and exchanging information. Quick stats:- Students have collectively spent more than 745 hours total engaging with the app
- Average session duration is 75.3 seconds
- During orientation week the Interact feed was viewed over 10,000 times and generated more than 3,000 user actions, and there were on average 10 views per unique user
A worthwhile experiment
In 2015, Birkbeck ran their biggest orientation and designed it to be a branded event, so it was a natural progression for them to grow the event even more in 2016 - which included introducing the app. Gemma acknowledges that it’s a challenge for Universities to go completely digital immediately, but sees it as a trend that is increasingly important. The Student Engagement team knew an app would be an experiment, so in order to minimize risk, they first built a trial app to test out internally. Guidebook makes this easy by allowing all users to start building free. After testing the platform, they had greater confidence in creating an app for their students. Gemma adds, “It’s a nice platform to use without having to be savvy at coding - it made sense.” Guidebook’s excellent customer service added to the positive experience. “It was just really, really smooth working with Stewart. He was very helpful, friendly, and worked on things very quickly.” Gauging success is something Birkbeck University will continue to refine along with their programs. One metric that will be tracked as the year progresses is the retention rate of students. Another metric is an “improved sense of community,” via indicators such as an increasing number of students who attend events, student engagement on social channels, and responsiveness to communications.
The app provides a critical, digital-first method of creating community. Birkbeck, University of London, is eager to build on this year’s improvements by evolving not only their orientation program, but the campus experience for students as a whole. Gemma shares:“To me, it's more than an event app. It’s a new student app. The app is there for them from when they apply through to when they become a student, and it gives them a space to keep engaging constantly.”
