In a recent episode of Guidebook Meets, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Marina McCormick, President of the Texas Association of Parents and Educators of the Deaf (TAPED). The conversation shed light on how event technology, particularly mobile apps, is advancing inclusivity and breaking barriers for individuals with disabilities. With accessibility at the forefront, this discussion showcased the transformative role apps can play in creating equitable experiences for all.

Inclusive Mobile Experiences

Dr. McCormick discussed how tools like Guidebook are designed to provide real-time updates and communication that make a significant difference in accessibility. She highlighted the importance of thoughtful design that respects the individual while delivering accessible solutions, stating:
“We want to be accessible, but we also want to be respectful of the individual who is requiring that accessibility. We really love the use of push notifications to communicate conference updates more effectively with our participants.”
This insight reinforces that accessibility isn’t just about adding features—it’s about creating an inclusive, respectful experience for everyone.

Features Making Events More Accessible

Guidebook apps offer several features that event organizers can use to enhance accessibility:
  • Dynamic Text Sizing: Attendees can adjust text sizes on their devices to ensure readability, helping those with visual impairments navigate content effortlessly.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility: Ongoing updates are improving compatibility with screen readers, making Guidebook apps easier to use for attendees with visual disabilities.
  • Customizable Themes: Event organizers can adjust color contrast to meet accessibility guidelines, ensuring that the app is visually inclusive.
  • Interactive Maps and Directions: These features assist all attendees, particularly those who may find navigating large venues challenging, offering step-by-step guidance and clear, readable visuals.
Dr. McCormick highlighted how such features allow attendees with disabilities to engage with events more independently and confidently, creating a more equitable experience.

Technology Driving Progress

While accessibility has come a long way, Dr. McCormick acknowledged there is still work to do. However, she expressed optimism about the role technology will continue to play:
“I think we’re going to see huge gains with accessibility through the use of technology.”
Guidebook’s Accessibility Roadmap, updated in September 2024, outlines key areas for improvement. These include resolving gaps in screen reader functionality, implementing better alt-text for images, and making schedule navigation more intuitive. These efforts, set to roll out through 2025, align with Guidebook’s mission to ensure that all attendees, regardless of ability, can fully participate in events.

Building a More Inclusive Future

As the conversation with Dr. McCormick revealed, accessibility isn’t just about meeting technical standards—it’s about empowering people. By leveraging tools like Guidebook, event organizers can create environments that welcome everyone and support meaningful engagement.
